Treatment with donated eggs, sperm, and embryos

Treatment with donated eggs, sperm, and embryos

In complaince with the applicable Slovak legislation, single women may not undergo treatment with donated sex cells (eggs or sperm) and embryos. The legislation does not set any upper age limit for female recipients, but for ethical reasons, Gyncare accepts the upper age limit of 52 years for any patient  undergoing the above treatment. The patient must be in good health condition and fit enough to carry a baby and give birth.

Who are the egg donors?

Donors are young females under the age of 34 who apply in our centre and want to help other women. Each donor must have at least secondary education. They are typically university students or mothers who already have children and donation is their way of helping infertile couples. All donors are carefully selected to ensure the highest quality eggs.

All donors must meet strict criteria for egg donation and always undergo gynecological, genetic and endocrinological tests and assessments. They also need to have repeated negative results in testing for communicable infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis B and C, as well as syphilis). There must be no hereditary or genetic developmental defects in the donor’s family history. Only the donors who pass all the above tests and assessments with negative results are included in the donation program.

The process of the treatment with donated eggs

  1. After stimulating the donor’s ovaries and retrieval of mature eggs, the eggs are fertilized with the sperm of the recipient’s partner. Fresh as well as cryopreserved (frozen) sperm may be used. After culturing for several days, all suitable embryos are frozen.
  2. The transfer of the embryo itself will take place within your natural cycle on a day that is aligned with the day of embryo development and the particular day of your menstrual cycle. In the second half of the cycle, after ovulation, you will start taking progestogens – pregnancy hormones that prepare the tissue lining of the uterus for embryo implant.
  3. After the transfer, you will continue to take progestogens (for 10 to 14  days) until a blood test for hCG, the pregnancy hormone, has been performed.

Treatment guarantee

We select a suitable donor based on the recipient’s requirements (height, weight, hair and eye color, education). We respect the matching of the blood group and the Rh factor of the donor and the recipient.

Each recipient who chooses IVF treatment with donated oocytes in the Premium Programme can expect to obtain at least 2 high-quality embryos prepared for transfer. Based on the physician’s recommendations, the treated couple can decide on their own, how many embryos will be transferred. The remaining embryo(s) shall be frozen and remain cryopreserved for the recipient for further use.
